Fines, Fees, and Our Courts

2 minute read

In our final installment of this series, we hear from three Unite endorsed candidates: Hilary Wheatley Taylor, and Slate of 8 candidates Chelsa Wagner and Wrenna Watson.

Fines and fees can easily get overwhelming for a litigant. When attached to one’s ability to drive, they come with extra complications and one missed payment can lead to a cycle of license loss, extra fees, and the potential for other life-altering impacts. It is so important that our judges and magistrates understand how to assess a litigant’s ability to pay.

We will also be discussing new legislation being proposed by our very own Rep. Dan Miller who is working in his legislative capacity to put an end to our courts punishing the poor who cannot afford to pay their fines and fees.
